Exciting things are happening with the CHS Foundation University Partner program, which supports scholarships and college club grants at 25 colleges and universities. In the next year, 226 scholarships totaling more than $350,000 will help students pursuing education in preparation for careers in agriculture. More than a third of those awards will go to first-year students.

Miles Community College, Miles City, Mont., is the newest addition to the program and one of 12 two-year colleges that are CHS university partners. Miles Community College has a strong agriculture program with 100 percent of graduates employed after graduation or going on to pursue a four-year degree.

“The University Partner program is a cornerstone of our efforts to develop ag leaders for life,” says Nanci Lilja, president, CHS Foundation. “By providing support for students who are interested in careers in agriculture, we are helping ensure that our industry has strong future leaders.”

Another dynamic piece of the University Partner program is experiences provided by CHS college club mini-grants. The grants are awarded to ag-focused clubs at partner schools to encourage students to participate in professional development opportunities outside the classroom.

The Precision Ag Club at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, N.D., recently used its grant to visit the Nutrien potash mine in Rocanville, Saskatchewan. The experience included an underground mine tour and in-depth look at the refining facility.

“The trip was organized by the club members, helping them learn organizational and leadership skills,” says Preston Sundeen, Precision Ag Club advisor, Lake Region State College. “Seeing agriculture in action opens students’ eyes to career options.”
